Presentation timing
Speaking Time for Presentations
Presentation timing depends on word count, speaking speed, pauses, slides, examples, and audience interaction. A speaking-time estimate helps you cut or expand a script before rehearsal.
Paste your script into the Reading Time Calculator or Word Counter to estimate speaking time. A common conversational range is around 130 to 160 words per minute, but real presentations often need extra time for transitions and pauses.
Rough planning ranges
- 3 minutes: about 390 to 480 spoken words.
- 5 minutes: about 650 to 800 spoken words.
- 10 minutes: about 1,300 to 1,600 spoken words.
- 15 minutes: about 1,950 to 2,400 spoken words.
How to improve timing
Time one section aloud, then compare it with the estimate. If your slides require explanation, add buffer. If your script is too long, cut repeated setup lines before cutting examples that help the audience understand.
