Time estimates
How Many Words Per Minute?
Words per minute is a practical way to estimate how long text takes to read or speak. The right number depends on the audience, format, and delivery style.
The Reading Time Calculator uses word count and words per minute to estimate time. Use a higher number for silent reading and a lower number for spoken scripts.
Useful ranges
- Silent reading: often around 200 to 250 words per minute for general web content.
- Clear narration: often around 130 to 160 words per minute.
- Presentations: often slower because slides, pauses, and audience reactions add time.
- Short-form video: can be faster, but clarity usually matters more than speed.
How to estimate more accurately
Count the words, choose a reasonable pace, then test one paragraph aloud. If you pause for demos, screen recordings, charts, or jokes, add buffer time. A script that calculates as five minutes may become six or seven minutes in a real recording.
