Video SEO writing
YouTube Description Character Limit
YouTube descriptions can use up to 5,000 characters. The title field is much shorter, so count both before publishing a video, Shorts description, tutorial, product review, or podcast episode.
Paste your title or description into the Character Counter. It shows characters with spaces, characters without spaces, words, lines, and common publishing limits including YouTube titles and descriptions.
What to check before publishing
- Keep the title clear and front-load the main search phrase.
- Use the first few description lines to explain the video before viewers click “Show more.”
- Count after adding timestamps, resource links, credits, hashtags, and calls to action.
- Avoid repeating long keyword lists; write a useful description that matches the video.
Description structure
Start with a one or two sentence summary. Then add chapters, useful links, credits, and related resources. If the video is a tutorial, include the exact problem, tool, or outcome viewers are searching for.
Script and description workflow
Use the YouTube script reading time guide to estimate how long the video script will take, then use the character counter to keep the title, description, and YouTube tags inside practical publishing limits.
