Text metrics
Word Count vs Character Count
Word count measures how many words are in a piece of writing. Character count measures letters, numbers, punctuation, symbols, and sometimes spaces. Both metrics matter, but they solve different problems.
Use the Word Counter when you are writing essays, articles, speeches, reports, or scripts. Use the Character Counter when a field has a strict limit, such as a title, meta description, social post, ad, bio, or short answer.
When word count matters
- Essays and assignments with minimum or maximum word limits.
- Blog posts and articles where depth and reading time matter.
- Scripts, speeches, and presentations that need time estimates.
When character count matters
- SEO titles and meta descriptions.
- Social media posts, captions, and bios.
- Forms, ads, SMS text, and database fields.
If you are not sure which one matters, check both. A text can have a comfortable word count but still be too long for a character-limited field.
