X Post Character Limit
A standard X post can be up to 280 characters. Premium long posts can be much longer, but short posts still need a clear hook, clean line breaks, and enough space for links, handles, and hashtags.
Paste your draft into the Character Counter. It shows characters with spaces, characters without spaces, words, lines, and common social limits including X posts.
Standard posts vs Premium long posts
For most short posts, replies, and thread starters, write against the 280 character limit. If you have access to long posts, use the extra length for explainers, product notes, and updates that would otherwise need a full thread.
How to edit before posting
- Write the core point first, then cut anything that repeats the same idea.
- Count after adding links, hashtags, usernames, punctuation, emojis, and line breaks.
- Keep thread openers short enough to be understood before the reader clicks through.
- If the post is near the limit, rewrite the first sentence instead of only deleting from the end.
Thread workflow
Draft the full thread in a document, then paste each post into the counter one by one. Use the Word Frequency Counter to avoid repeating the same phrase across every post in the thread.
