What is the Reddit title character limit?
Reddit's official post submission API documentation states that a title can be up to 300 characters long. The checker above measures letters, numbers, spaces, punctuation, and Unicode characters as you type.
Three hundred characters is the platform-wide ceiling, not a promise that every community accepts a title that long. Reddit also exposes subreddit post requirements, including community-defined minimum and maximum title lengths. Always review the posting form and rules for the subreddit you selected.
How to write a clear Reddit title
- Lead with the question, result, or problem instead of background details.
- Add the context a reader needs, such as the product, location, platform, or version.
- Remove filler words before removing useful specifics.
- Follow required tags, brackets, spoiler wording, and flair instructions for the community.
- Avoid vague clickbait because moderators may remove titles that hide the actual topic.
Title length vs. post body
Your title should make the topic understandable in a feed. Put evidence, links, troubleshooting steps, and longer background in the post body. When a title approaches the limit, keep the distinguishing details and move the explanation below it.
Frequently asked questions
Can a subreddit use a shorter title limit?
Yes. Moderators can set community-specific minimum and maximum title lengths. A title below 300 characters can still be rejected if it falls outside that subreddit's configured range.
Do spaces and punctuation count?
Yes. Spaces, punctuation, numbers, and letters contribute to the total. The live checker includes them in the count.
Why does the posting form reject a title under 300 characters?
The subreddit may enforce a shorter limit, a minimum length, required words, banned words, or a title format. Read the validation message and community rules before editing the title.
