Image File Name SEO
A descriptive image file name gives search engines and site editors useful context before the image is rendered. It should identify the visible subject in plain language without becoming a list of repeated keywords.
SEO friendly image file name patterns
| Image type | Useful pattern | Example |
|---|---|---|
| Product photo | product-model-view | black-running-shoe-side-view.jpg |
| Blog illustration | topic-detail | email-preheader-length-example.png |
| Interface screenshot | product-screen-action | character-counter-word-frequency-report.webp |
| Location photo | place-subject | seattle-library-reading-room.jpg |
| Social graphic | campaign-format | summer-launch-instagram-story.png |
Image naming checklist
- Describe what is actually visible in the image.
- Use lowercase words separated by hyphens.
- Put the distinctive subject before generic words such as image or photo.
- Keep camera defaults, export timestamps, and internal version labels out of public names.
- Use a correct extension such as JPG, PNG, WebP, or AVIF for the delivered format.
- Write separate alt text; the file name does not replace an accessible image description.
Examples: weak versus useful
| Weak file name | Improved file name | Reason |
|---|---|---|
| IMG_4827.jpg | red-ceramic-coffee-mug.jpg | Names the visible product. |
| seo-keyword-image-best-seo.png | keyword-density-report-example.png | Removes repetition and states the image purpose. |
| final-homepage-v6.webp | text-metrics-tools-homepage.webp | Removes an internal workflow label. |
