Download File Name Character Count
A download file name should be short enough to read and specific enough to identify later. Character count helps you avoid names that get truncated in browsers, email attachments, cloud folders, and mobile downloads.
Practical file name length ranges
| File type | Practical range | Example file name |
|---|---|---|
| PDF guide | 20 to 60 characters | seo-title-checklist.pdf |
| CSV report | 20 to 55 characters | keyword-density-report.csv |
| Template | 25 to 65 characters | landing-page-copy-template.xlsx |
| ZIP package | 20 to 55 characters | clean-text-samples.zip |
| Client file | 30 to 75 characters | website-copy-review-2026-06.pdf |
File name checklist
- Include the topic or resource type near the beginning.
- Use hyphens or underscores instead of spaces when the file will be shared widely.
- Keep the file extension visible and accurate.
- Remove filler words like final, latest, new, or updated unless they are part of a version system.
- Make the file name match the download CTA and confirmation message.
Five-minute workflow
- Write the file name without the extension first.
- Paste it into the Character Counter.
- Add the extension and check the full length again. For public files, compare the name with File Name SEO.
- For PDF downloads, compare the title with PDF Title Character Count.
- Compare the download button with Download Button Copy Examples.
- Use the Text Cleaner if the file name came from copied title text with extra spaces.
Examples to improve
"download.pdf" is short but not useful. "complete-final-updated-copywriting-checklist-version-3-final.pdf" is specific but hard to scan. "copywriting-checklist.pdf" is easier to recognize in a downloads folder and easier to match with a button such as "Download checklist".
