Product Description Character Count
Product descriptions need enough detail for shoppers and search engines, but they should still be easy to scan. Count the characters, words, repeated terms, and product feed limits before publishing copy to a store, marketplace, or ad feed.
Use the Character Counter to check title and description length. Google Merchant Center lists 150 characters for product titles and 5,000 characters for product descriptions, so the counter includes both limits for product feed drafting.
What to count before publishing
- Product title, including brand, model, color, size, material, or pack count.
- Main description, including spaces, punctuation, units, and line breaks.
- Bullet points, benefit statements, care notes, and compatibility details.
- Repeated keywords that may make the copy look stuffed instead of useful.
Better product copy workflow
Write the title first, then the first two description sentences. These usually carry the most search and conversion value. After that, add specifications, use cases, and comparison details only where they help a buyer decide.
Paste the draft into the Word Frequency Counter to find repeated product words. If one term dominates the copy, replace some repeats with details such as dimensions, material, fit, use case, or care instructions.
Useful length targets
There is no single best length for every product page. Simple products can work with a short description and clear specifications. Complex products often need a longer explanation, but the first screen should still answer what the product is, who it is for, and why it is different.
