Email Subject Line Character Limit
Many email marketing guides recommend keeping subject lines under 60 characters, and mobile inboxes often show even less. Count the subject line before sending so the main hook appears before the inbox cuts it off.
Use the Character Counter to check subject line length, word count, punctuation, and other short-copy limits while drafting.
Useful subject line targets
- 60 characters: a practical upper target recommended by major email marketing guides.
- 40 to 50 characters: safer for many mobile inbox previews.
- About 7 to 9 words: short enough to scan quickly in a crowded inbox.
- Put the most important product, benefit, or deadline near the beginning.
What to count before sending
Count spaces, punctuation, emoji, personalization tokens, and date or discount details. If you use a recipient name token, test a long sample name so the final subject line still fits.
Quick workflow
Write one clear version, one shorter mobile-first version, and one curiosity-driven version. Count all three, then choose the version that explains the email without sounding vague or spammy.
